Since the beginning of Mercedes-Benz history, innovation has been at the core of the brand. Breakthrough technology isn’t something new for Mercedes-Benz and the innovations show no sign of slowing down. Here’s a list of the top 5 Mercedes-Benz innovations.
5. Electric-powered car – 1906
In 1906 Mercedes-Benz developed an early form of Electrical-powered vehicle. This car was the original hybrid vehicle that helped secure the modern conception of hybrid powered vehicles available in the Mercedes-Benz line-up today.
4. Antilock Braking System (ABS) – 1978
Mercedes-Benz put an ABS system for the first time into a production car in 1978, although ABS was conceptualized and revealed in 1970. The ABS system helped revolutionize automotive safety by allowing the driver to retain steering control under heavy braking by preventing the wheels from lockup.
3. Crash testing program – 1958
In 1958 Mercedes-Benz set automotive safety history by setting up crash testing for all new Mercedes-Benz vehicles. This innovation allowed Mercedes-Benz to study crashes and make adjustments for driver safety accordingly.
2. PRE-SAFE – 2002
PRE-SAFE is an advanced pre-detection system that detects when collisions are impending. It braces the car and it’s occupants by tightening the front seat belts, adjusts the front headrests, it even closes all windows and sunroof. This system was later used to create DISTRONIC PLUS in 2006, which is the advanced adaptive cruise control system.
1. The first car! – 1886
In 1886 Carl Benz was awarded the patent for creating a three-wheeled, single cylinder engine “Motorwagen”. The invention of this car changed the mobility of humans forever.
