The Mercedes-Benz EQ line up of cars is only going to become more relevant as time goes on. Because of the initiative towards a cleaner future Mercedes-Benz looks to participate by applying its class leading innovation to electric and hybrid vehicles. The EQ stands for “Electric Intelligence” and that’s exactly what this new model line looks to accomplish.
Currently, the Mercedes-Benz EQ is only in concept form. It’s futuristic styling is set to be close to what the production model is likely to look like. It won’t be long until the production model hits our showroom floor with an estimate of the first EQ SUV being market-ready in 2019, and by 2022 ten more electric models will follow.
The concept EQ is equipped with two electric motors and swappable battery components that allow it have an increased battery output of up to 300kW. It features a permanent all-wheel drive system to maximize performance and allows for instantaneous torque availability. The low centre of gravity from the battery layout contribute to balanced handling and better overall driving dynamics. The performance benefits of an electrically operated vehicle tell us that the future is not only fun but extremely clean for the environment. Because the battery capacity yields close to 500 kilometres of range per charge there’s a lot of fun to be had with just a single charge.
It’s contemporary design sets the stage for the future of the Mercedes-Benz EQ line-up. Its “electro-look” is used to highlight the importance and focal point of the electric powertrain. The blue lights on the front fascia, side sills, electric charging port, and throughout the entire cabin give a futuristic vibe while defining the elegant lines at the same time. This concept design language will be used heavily for the future of the Mercedes-Benz EQ range, and will surely set an industry standard.
Mercedes-Benz currently offers the GLC and GLE models in a plug-in hybrid platform. The hybrid system takes an efficient gasoline engine and pairs it with an electric motor to achieve both impressive fuel economy and performance. The GLC 350 e 4MATIC plug-in hybrid emits just 64-59 grams of CO² per kilometre, which is a new standard in its respective class. The all new sprinter comes available in the form of an eSprinter which is a fully electric model for the sprinter range, a first in its respective class. For now its a glimpse into the capabilities that electric Mercedes-Benz possess as we get closer to building an extensive EQ line-up.
